Kimi no Egao ga Mitai kara (Magic Knight Rayearth Original Songbook 2)

The very song this website is named after. :) To me (and probably many Umi+Clef fans), it bears great significance. It's a Clef song which is pretty interesting since he hardly expresses his true feelings throughout the series. Let's have fun analysing this, shall we?
Moshimo kimi e no omoi wo umi e to nagashita to shitara / If I shed my feelings of you into the sea,
Kouzui ni naru darou Sou afure dete / It would have floods, yes overflowing
The first verse is really overwhelming. Aside from the obvious, an interesting thing to note is that the imagery of 'sea' and 'water' is present throughout this song. It directly links us to Umi (meaning 'sea') since the Water Knight represents those images.
Sonna setsunai kimochi mo kotoba ni dasenakute kyou mo / Even if I can't put these sad feelings into words today,
Tamerai no hotori ni tada ireru keredo / I just keep being by the side of hesitation, but...

Tashika ni ieru yo zutto kimi no koto mimaru, to... / Surely, I'll be able to say it! I'll always watch over you, and...
Clef's characteristic: Not being able to express himself truthfully all the time. He's deeply protective but sometimes he just doesn't take the first step. That's how I see him, and this song just highlights it. :P
Kimi no egao mite itai yo / I want to see your smile!
Sou kanashimi wa hodoite agetai /Yes, I want to untie you from sadness
Boku no kokoro no chikara de / With the power of my heart

Kimi no egao mamoritai yo / I want to protect your smile!
Moshi koibito ni narenai mama demo / Even if I can't be your lover now,
Kimi ni kagayaite hoshii / I just want you to shine

Kimi no egao mite itai yo / I want to keep on seeing your smile!
Sou kanashimi wa hodoite agetai / Yes, I want to untie you from sadness
Kimi wa boku no yuuki da yo / You are my courage!
Sorry, I got lazy and lumped all the choruses together. Lol. The first + third one clearly phrase a direct reflection of happiness versus sadness. All of them scream features of a love song. The word koibito/lover is explicitly stated. It really is surprising. But as mentioned above, Clef's characteristic of being more reserved action-wise comes in. Why so? Let's see the final part.
Maru de osanai jidai ni hajimete umi wo mita you ni / As when I saw the sea for the first time when I was a very little child
Kimi to atta ano shunkan Mune takanatta / In the instant I met you, my heart throbbed violently

Soshite are kara kisetsu wa ikudo ka iro wo kaeta kedo... / And, since then, the seasons have changed colors once and twice...
Tomodachi no mamma de umi nagamete 'ru / But Umi is gazing at me just as friends.

Miri-zutsu demo sotto chikazuite mitai kedo... / I want to try to approach you softly at least a millimeter at a time, but...
The first part clarifies the match between the sea and Umi. It's odd to see the violent bit but I guess it gives Clef a little more depth to his emotions. He can be pretty hot-tempered and brash after all.

The second verse comes a little more shocking: besides directly referring to Umi (don't you love puns?), it also says that she only looks towards him as friends (I must say, they love torturing the fans). I'd thought that with the passing of seasons/time, people grow a bit more aware of feelings. However, we are presented with the opposite. It looks as though Clef sees Umi seeing him as a good friend to confide in. This may work out in the manga since the hints are very subtle, but it's harder to see this fit into the anime scenario.

The last line is really sweet and thoughtful. But as always, there's the hesitation. From a writer's perspective, it gives us fans so much to play with. :)

Goran, Taiyou da yo (With Rayearth [OAV Album])

I didn't intend to analyse this song but I found some interesting bits within this Clef OAV song. :D I'll just pick out a few parts to look at.
Sabishikute naga-sugiru fuyu datta / It was a winter that has been too sad and long
Namida sae kooritsuku fuyu datta / It was a winter that can freeze even tears
It doesn't look like much but let's take this a little further. The opposite of winter can be said to be spring, when there is the rebirth as the sun shines on life.
Kanashimi wo tokashite / It's your smile that
Kureta no wa kimi no egao sa / Melted my sorrow
Takanaru tokimeki wa / The fluttering heartbeats that cry out
Ima kimi ga boku no kokoro ni uchiageta taiyou sa / Now you're the sun that strikes this heart of mine
The image of a smile (from Clef's song above) comes in again, coupled with a new image of the sun (as described earlier). And yes, as the song plays out, it seems to be more and more of a love song.
Hora goran, soko sa! Kimi ga taiyou sa! / Hora look, right there! You're the sun!
Other than that, I'll just add that Umi's birthday is the early March, which interestingly you can see the transition between winter and spring (give and take some days). ^^
